INDIANAPOLIS  – “I would never expect that somebody who had just been out killing people would come and pick me up,” says an Indianapolis woman who was visiting Kalamazoo Michigan during the mass shooting.

But that is exactly what happened when the Indianapolis couple hopped inside of accused killer 45-year-old Jason Dalton’s car Saturday night in Kalamazoo Michigan - thinking it was just another Uber ride.

“My husband told me the Uber will be here in six minutes. His name is Jason, he is in an HHR,” says the woman.

Dalton is accused of killing six people and injuring two others in a shooting rampage Saturday. Dalton allegedly drove around firing at strangers, then continued on his Uber route to pick up and drop off customers.

An Indianapolis couple who wants to remain anonymous was one of his customers. The couple tells FOX59 they decided to take an Uber after hearing there was a shooter on the loose, thinking that was their safest option. They had no idea they were just inches away from the alleged killer.

“At that time, he was just really quiet and reserved,” says the Indianapolis man who sat in the front passenger seat next to Dalton.

The couple mentioned the shooting during the ride and Dalton appeared to be aware there was a gunman on the loose. Then, they asked him a bone chilling question.

“I halfheartedly joked with him and said you are not the shooter are you? He said no, and I said are you sure….and he said no I’m just really tired. Looking back, it was a weird way to respond,” says the passenger.

Dalton told the couple he had been driving for seven hours that day, which is how long police say the shooting rampage lasted. The couple tells FOX59 they did not smell any gun powder, or see a weapon. However, police say they found a gun inside of Dalton’s car when they caught him minutes later.

“He had a weapon in the car that he has just killed people with,” says the woman.

Based on the timing and location of Dalton’s arrest, the Indianapolis couple may have been his final passengers.

“We feel really lucky that we came out of this unharmed. Obviously, our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the people who were not so lucky,” says the man.
