INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — An Indianapolis man is shot and killed by his girlfriend inside their northeast side apartment.
According to IMPD, officers were dispatched just before 6:40 a.m. Monday to the 6100 block of Le Harve Drive. That’s at A62 Apartments near Allisonville Road and 62nd Street. That’s where officers found a man dead after being shot in the chest.
The killing comes in the middle of domestic violence awareness month.
Police still don’t know why the woman shot and killed her boyfriend, but investigators say she admitted to pulling the trigger before calling 9-1-1.
“This is an isolated incident involving a male and female in the apartment. What we’re trying to do now is determine exactly what took place,” said IMPD officer Aaron Hamer.
Police say the girlfriend cooperated fully with investigators. We don’t know if there were previous incidents of violence between the couple, but experts say domestic violence can erupt without any warning signs.
“These situations often escalate before family and friends see there is a problem or before the victim themselves see it as a problem,” said Mary-Margaret Sweeney with the Domestic Violence Network.
Sweeney says it’s important for domestic violence victims to realize there are resources available to help.
“Often times victims feel really alone, like am I imagining this or is it as bad as I’m making it out to be,” said Sweeney.
The best first step is to pick up the phone and dial 211. That’s a one-stop shop of resources to help victims leave violent relationships before they turn deadly.
“Calling 211 you can explain your situation and they will ask if you need shelter or a protective order or what is it that you need to find the services that fit you,” said Sweeney.
While investigators believe this morning’s shooting stemmed from a domestic incident, they couldn’t say whether the shooting was deliberate or accidental.
“With regards to the domestic, I think it’s all being investigated and again it’s early on in the investigation so they’re trying to determine what occurred and what led up to this point,” said Hamer.
Police say the girlfriend was taken in for formal questioning, but has not been arrested for the shooting.
