INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 6, 2015)– An Indianapolis mother was sentenced to 60 years Friday in connection with the death of her 2-year-old daughter.
Brittney Massey received a 56-year sentence at the Indiana Department of Correction, followed by a probation period of four years for her role in the death of her two-year-old daughter, Destinee.
Massey was found guilty in January of murder, battery and neglect of a dependent for multiple instances of blunt force trauma to the child and for failing to obtain timely medical treatment.
“Tragically, we again find ourselves seeking justice for a young child who died at the hands of her caretaker,” Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry commented. “Parents and those who care for young children must act as protectors, not abusers. We are pleased with the sentence and hope that it brings greater public awareness to child abuse and the tragic results.”
Massey was arrested and charged in 2013 after investigators ruled the death of two-year-old Destinee to be a homicide.
Court documents show that Massey disciplined the child with a belt while potty training. Massey then held the child face down in her bed until she stopped crying.
