INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (April 7, 2016) – Is this the start of a new tradition?

Indianapolis singer/songwriter Josh Kaufman and the Indianapolis Children’s Choir will perform “Back Home Again in Indiana” during the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500.

Kaufman emerged as the winner on the sixth season of the singing competition show “The Voice.” Traditionally, Jim Nabors sang the song during the pre-race ceremonies, but Nabors delivered his final performance in 2014. He performed the song 35 times starting in 1972. The a capella group “Straight No Chaser” performed the song during the 2015 race.

“The singing of ‘Back Home Again in Indiana’ is a signature of the Indianapolis 500 and one that our fans cherish as a distinctly ‘Hoosier’ moment,” said J. Douglas Boles, Indianapolis Motor Speedway president. “Our goal is to select performers who have an understanding of the song’s meaning and significant importance to the Indianapolis 500 experience and the race’s fans. Josh Kaufman’s impressive voice and local ties, along with support from the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, will deliver just that.”

Kaufman, now an Indianapolis-based guitarist and piano player, was born in Florida and started singing in church when he was 4 years old. He’s been keeping busy while working on his debut album, sitting in with The Roots on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” headlining the Indy Jazz Fest and making his Broadway debut in the Tony Award-winning “Pippin,” in which he played the lead role.

“I strive to make deep emotional connections with my music and on Memorial Day Weekend at the Indy 500, nothing goes deeper with fans than ‘Back Home Again in Indiana,'” said Kaufman, who served as grand marshal of the 2014 IPL 500 Festival Parade. “I can’t wait to be a part of history on such a special day.”
