INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (September 28, 2014) — It’s official – the Indianapolis Zoo’s Amur Tiger cub, born in July, finally has a name!

The zoo opened the voting to the public, giving them the choice of selecting Chudok, Shoomka or Zoya as her name. The winner? Zoya, with 61 percent of the vote. Nearly 7,000 people voted. The name means “life” and is a variation of the name Zoe, which is a popular name in Russia and Ukraine where the tigers originate.

Zoo reps say Zoya is growing big and strong, and has already started stalking and pouncing. She and her mother have remained in a private indoor area since the birth, but will soon make their public debut.
