INDIANAPOLIS — A 57-year-old man has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a deadly shooting on Indy’s west side late Thursday night. Leon Brewer is charged with murder.

“Another innocent life on the street has been taken,” said Doug, who asked that we not use his last name.

Standing in the exact spot in a snow-covered driveway on Bertha Court where a man lost his life overnight, Doug is still struggling to make sense of the violence.

“It’s very sad,” said Doug. “There’s nothing anyone can do to bring him back.”

Doug describes the victim, 53-year-old Charles Cole, as a friend. Police were called to Doug’s home in the 200 block of Bertha Court just before 11:30 p.m on Thursday. Cole was found in Doug’s driveway, pronounced dead by EMS.

“It broke me down almost because he was not a violent person and was always a good man,” said Doug, who wasn’t home at the time of the shooting and isn’t sure what motivated the violence.

Witnesses reportedly told police a dark-colored Saturn sedan was spotted in the area at the time of the shooting. Police have not said if this vehicle was linked to Brewer. Police did respond to the same neighborhood for a shots fired call as recently as this week, however.

“We have a lot of shots fired runs in this location and this general area. I don’t know if it has anything to do with that, but we’ve responded several times to this area for shots fired,” said IMPD Commander Kerry Buckner.

Police said detectives ended up being led to Brewer who was detained in connection with the murder and taken in for questioning. After further investigation, Brewer was arrested. Final charging will be done by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office after the case is reviewed.
