Indiana State Police said Monday that 10-year-old Kayden Sendelbach died Saturday morning after suffering fatal stab wounds Thursday.

ISP added that the suspect, William Sendelbach, is expected to survive after being shot multiple times by Wabash police officers who returned fire after William allegedly fired a shotgun at them.

A Wabash officer who was allegedly shot in the leg by William is expected to make a full recovery, according to state police.

WABASH, Ind. (WANE) — Indiana State Police (ISP) have begun an investigation after an officer was shot and a boy was stabbed during an incident in Wabash Thursday morning.

Around 7 a.m., officers with the Wabash Police Department were called to a home at 294 E. Maple St. on a report of a domestic dispute.

ISP said officers arrived and found a man – William Sendelbach, 32 – outside with a gun. As police approached, Sendelbach fired a shotgun blast and struck arriving officer Nick Brubaker, a 23-year veteran of the city police force, in the leg.

Brubaker suffered non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Officers returned fire and hit Sendelbach several times. He was airlifted from the scene to a Fort Wayne hospital. His condition remains unknown.

When police went inside home, officers found a 10-year-old boy – Sendelbach’s son – with apparent stab wounds. He was taken to Riley Hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.

According to ISP, the investigation revealed Sendelbach allegedly shot at an occupied garbage truck that was making its morning rounds prior to the arrival of officers. ISP said the driver of the truck was not injured.
