RICHMOND, Ind. – Police in Richmond are investigating a shooting that killed a 27-year-old man early Thursday morning.
“We think that this is an isolated incident,” said Richmond Police Chief James Branum.
According to the Richmond Police Department, officers responded to Genesis Apartments in the 1000 block of South 23rd Street around 1:50 a.m. Witnesses say they heard nearly a dozen gunshots then saw a man run off through the complex.
“Our first steps are to figure out why Mr. Lewis was at this apartment complex. He was not a resident and it was 2 a.m.,” said Chief Branum.
The initial crime scene was located in a parking lot, police said, and investigators found a man dead from multiple gunshot wounds. Police identified the deceased as 27-year-old Jason Lewis.
“We are fairly confident that there are people who know why Mr. Lewis was there and hopefully, know who else is involved,” said Chief James Branum.
Lewis’ body was taken to Montgomery County, Ohio, for an autopsy.
Police interviewed several potential witnesses as they processed the crime scene. The suspect was described as a black male, about 6’0” with a thin build. He wore black shorts and a red shirt, police said.
This is the third homicide for the city in the past four months. Police made an arrest in only one of those cases.
“We generally solve our homicides and we are way above the national average for solve rates,” said Chief Branum.
Chief Branum is confident his team will soon close this case as well as the other open homicides.
“We in all likelihood are going to find you eventually,” said Chief Branum.
