RANDOLPH COUNTY, Ind. (June 22, 2015) – A warrant has been filed for a mom accused of child neglect in Randolph County, after her children were found living in deplorable conditions.

According to court documents, two girls, ages 5 and 7, were found walking down a street in Winchester on Nov. 23. They were not wearing shoes or coats. When Winchester Police stopped the girls, the girls begged them not to take the back to their home, and instead, take them to their grandparents house.  The girls told police they were afraid of the dog and their ears hurt from their mother yelling at them.

Police went to the girls home on North West Street to find their mother, Britney McCoy. She told police she was asleep when the girls left and that “her girls should have woken her up.” The girls told police they climbed through a window to the roof of the house and jumped to the ground below. McCoy slept just 24 inches away from the window.

When officers went inside, they found trash and dirty clothes littering the floor, along with food covered with mold. There was also feces reported covering the floor and a toilet that did not work. Lice was found in girls’ hair.

Neighbors said when McCoy and others moved into the home, they barely brought any furniture or toys for the girls. Court documents show police found the girls were living in the same bedroom as their mother and shared a twin-sized air mattress. Next to their bed, feces was found ground into the carpet.

It took the Randolph County Prosecutors Office more than seven months to file charges. The Winchester Police Department said they completed their paperwork after the investigation in November and submitted it to the prosecutors office. Charges against McCoy were listed as filed on June 18, 2015. A warrant was issued for her arrest on June 22 with bond set at $5,000. She has not yet been arrested.
