LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Investigators are trying to figure out what led up to an elementary art teacher’s death.
Officers say 52-year-old Kristi Redmon was found dead outside her home.
Wednesday evening, just before 8:30, Lafayette Police were called to Ridgeway Avenue for reports of gunfire.
“We heard four gunshots and of course, (it) scared us because we aren’t used to that in this neighborhood at all,” explained Brian Jenkinson, a neighbor.
Jenkinson told FOX 59 he called 911 and then tried to help Redmon, but it was too late.
“As I walked down the street I saw the lady lying on her porch, Kristi. It was pretty devastating,” Jenkinson said.
Thursday evening, Redmon’s home was still surrounded with crime tape and investigators returned with metal detectors. Detectives spent hours digging in Redmon’s front yard.
“(It) makes you kind of wonder when something like that because I came right out and it could’ve been a guy coming this way, or whatever you know,” explains Jenkinson, a neighbor.
For the past twenty years, Redmon had been an art teacher within the Lafayette School corporation.
“She’s just super nice and we miss her,” said Haley, one of Ms. Redmon’s students.
Haley and her 5-year-old stepsister, Izzy had art class with Ms. Redmon at Edgelea Elementary. The girls and the rest of Ms. Redmon’s students were told their teacher had passed away.
“A lot of our kids loved her and were with art team with her, they were just crying and bawling,” Haley said.
Grief counselors were at Edgelea and Miami Elementary and will be available for students for the next couple days.
At last check, no arrests have been made.
