MUNCIE, Ind. – Indiana State Police are investigating a police-action shooting that left a Muncie man dead Saturday afternoon.

Muncie police were called to the 1300 block of West 18th Street around 4:19 p.m. to investigate a possible domestic violence incident and stabbing.

When the officers arrived, they found the stabbing suspect, Larry Stepp, 31, standing on the edge of the street with a knife. State police say the officers were then forced to fire on the suspect after an initial confrontation with him.

Stepp was transported to IU Health’s Ball Hospital with life threatening injuries that he sustained from self-inflicted knife wounds and from the officer’s gunfire. He later succumbed to those injuries. An autopsy will be scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

A 15-year-old female stabbing victim was located inside the home. She was also transported to IU Health’s Ball Hospital, to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing and is still in the preliminary stages.
