BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (March 4, 2016) – The discovery of a suspicious package at Indiana University led to a “terroristic mischief” charge against a student, police say.
A school employee reported the suspicious package around 8:20 p.m. Thursday outside the school’s Student Services offices. Police found a sealed box outside; “call the bomb squad” was written on top.
At the time, the building was closed and no one was inside, police said.
IU police called in a bomb squad from Indiana State Police. The box did not contain an explosive; IU police said it contained books. Using information from the box, including the contents and a label on the outside, investigators traced it to a possible suspect.
IU student Daven Patton was arrested around 1:40 a.m. Friday. Police found evidence linking him to the box inside his home. Patton faces a preliminary charge of “terroristic mischief.”
