TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (May 8, 2014)– The accused shooter of a Purdue University student appeared in court today, and told the judge he’s taking medicine to cope with mental illness.
Cody Cousins, 23, says he has been diagnosed with schizophrenia by a jail doctor. He is said to be taking Depakote to treat the illness.
This is the first time Cousins or his defense has made any mention of mental illness.
Cousins is accused of shooting and stabbing fellow Purdue University student Andrew Boldt, 21, inside an engineering classroom in January.
The judge agreed to appoint a public defender to represent Cousins, after Cousins and his attorney both agreed that they no longer trusted each other.
The murder trial is scheduled to start on October 6.
