INDIANAPOLIS – In case that headline looks a little familiar, it’s the same headline used a year ago when world champion competitive eater Joey Chestnut won the 2015 St. Elmo’s annual shrimp eating contest held as a part of the Big Ten Football Championship Game weekend.

In 2014 Chestnut ate a record 10.42 lb of shrimp in 8 minutes.

In 2015, that record fell when Chestnut ate 12.25 lb. of shrimp.

And this year, the record was shattered once again as Chestnut consumed a whopping 15 lb. of shrimp in 8 minutes.

His prize, $3,000 as well as the title, World Champion.

Around the world, the St. Elmo Shrimp Cocktail has gained a reputation for its fiery, sinus-clearing qualities.

The Travel Channel calls it ‘the world’s spiciest food.’
