MUNCIE, Ind. — A 16-year-old Muncie boy is facing an attempted murder charge.
According to a press release from the Muncie Police Department, officers responded to the 1800 block of East 17th Street on a report of a shooting. When police arrived at the scene, they located an 18-year-old female victim who had multiple gunshot wounds.
After an investigation, police determined the shooting occurred inside a residence. Investigators believe the 18-year-old woman was not the shooter’s intended target.
The 16-year-old boy, who is the victim’s brother, was arrested for attempted murder, dangerous possession of a firearm and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. The teenagers’ mother was also arrested for neglect of a dependent, dangerous control of a child and obstruction of justice, per MPD.
The mother has been identified as 40-year-old Ladonna M. Lee. Delaware County officials released an affidavit for probable cause related to their investigation of the shooting Monday afternoon.
According to court documents, the 16-year-old told officers that he had been hearing things and possibly saw a green laser before the shooting occurred. The boy added that he had been having bad feelings about his 18-year-old sister’s boyfriend.
Police reporting indicates the boy said he went to his mother’s bedroom, retrieved her gun, took it to a different area of the house and shot through a door several times. The boy told police he knew his sister’s boyfriend was in the room and that he shot through the door in an attempt to hit him.
The 18-year-old’s boyfriend told police he was playing video games when he heard four or five gunshots. He later realized the shots had come through the door, per court documents.
The boyfriend also reported to police that he grabbed a gun of his own to defend himself. He said he later realized his girlfriend had been shot, so he began to render aid and call 911.
According to court documents, Lee told police she was asleep when the incident initially occurred. Lee said she grabbed an unlocked gun off her dresser and carried it out of her room to see what was happening.
Lee then left the gun on a stroller in her bedroom when she realized what had happened. Police records indicate that investigators did not initially find any shell casings when they began to search the home.
Lee later advised that she had picked up the casings. Court documents state that Lee provided officers with the casings when they asked for them.
Neglect of a dependent — the most serious of the charges Lee faces — is a Level 3 Felony. The maximum penalty for a Level 3 Felony in Indiana is a 16-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $10,000.
