KOKOMO, Ind. — A juvenile was shot Tuesday at the Kokomo Beach Family Aquatic Center, according to the Kokomo Police Department.

Police were called to Kokomo Beach, located at 802 W. Park Avenue, shortly after 5 p.m.

Officers arrived to find a juvenile suffering from a gunshot wound. The juvenile was taken to local hospital before being flown to an Indianapolis hospital for further treatment, according to KPD.

Authorities say Howard County deputies found another juvenile leaving the area with a firearm. This juvenile was detained on preliminary charges of dangerous possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen handgun pending further investigation, police stated.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Investigators say a fight involving at least five juveniles happened before the shooting. Officers are working to identify the juveniles.

Anyone with information regarding this incident should call Captain Mike Banush at 765-456-7278.

“The safety and well-being of our citizens and employees has always been the utmost priority of the City of Kokomo,” Mayor Tyler Moore said in a statement. “While this isolated incident is currently under investigation, please rest assured that the Kokomo Police Department is conducting a thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice, including those taken into custody this evening.

Our citizens should begin to see additional KPD officers patrolling both Foster Park and Kokomo Beach, as we intend to show perpetrators that this type of violence will not be tolerated in our city.”

The mayor’s office confirmed the aquatic center would be closed Wednesday in response to the shooting.
