KOKOMO, Ind. (April 6, 2016)– A Kokomo High School teacher died during a school trip to China this week.

Superintendent Dr. Jeff Hauswald said Melanie Peoples, an English teacher, died in her sleep from natural causes. She was chaperoning the school’s spring break trip. Central middle School students were also on the trip.

Peoples taught at Kokomo Schools for 18 years, most recently teaching students in the International Baccalaureate program at Kokomo High School. She previously taught at Maple Crest Middle School.

Counselors will be available when students return to class on April 11. One counselor and other chaperones are currently with the students still in China.

“Mrs. Peoples was a gifted teacher and a wonderful person who impacted countless students and those who had the opportunity to know her,” said Superintendent Jeff Hauswald. “She will be deeply missed.”

Peoples’ family has requested that all donations in her memory go to the Kokomo Public Schools Education Foundation:
