UPDATE: Deadly truck fire closes southbound lanes I-65 in Boone County


UPDATE: The driver of the rear semi-tractor trailer which collided into slowed traffic was identified by the Boone County Coroner’s Office as 42-year-old Jose Amador of Joliet, Illinois..

BOONE COUNTY, Ind. — A person died in a fiery crash involving a semi on I-65 in Boone County.

EMS and numerous other emergency personnel responded to the scene around 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Traffic was stopped in all north and southbound lanes of I-65 near the St. Rd. 334 Zionsville/Whitestown exit due to the truck fire, which happened on the southbound side of the interstate.

According to the Whitestown Police Department, two semi trucks were involved in a crash, with one truck rear-ending the other in a construction zone.

The impact sparked a fire in the truck that rear-ended the other semi, police said. A person in that truck died. Three passenger vehicles were then involved in secondary collisions.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Department said the shutdown was between mile markers 130 and 133 on I-65.

As of Monday morning, the southbound lanes remained closed.
