LAWRENCE (March 20, 2014) – A Lawrence Central High School student has been charged as an adult following a rape reported Tuesday afternoon at the high school.
Jabril Scruggs, 16, faces a felony count of rape and two felony counts of criminal confinement, according to court documents from the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office. FOX59 does not typically identify minors charged with crimes, but is releasing Scruggs’ name because he is charged as an adult.
A 17-year-old girl approached school administrators Tuesday afternoon after she said Scruggs forced her into a locker room hallway and raped her. They had been in a common area waiting for rides home. The girl said Scruggs started putting his hands on her and came up behind her. She tried to resist, court documents said, but he moved her into the hallway, pulled down her pants and raped her.
Scruggs walked out after it was over and waited for the girl. They both walked out of the gym, where a teacher saw them and asked what they were doing. The instructor then told them to go to class. The girl went to the cafeteria, found a friend and asked to use her phone. She then called her mother and went to the school nurse to report what happened.
Police said surveillance footage from the school corroborates the girl’s report.
The school district released the following statement about the case Thursday morning:
MSD Lawrence Township district officials are deeply concerned by the recent events at Lawrence Central High School. This is a police matter and the district is cooperating fully with law enforcement officials. School disciplinary due process is also being followed and appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken, up to and including a recommendation for expulsion. As always the safety and security of all students is a top priority for the MSD of Lawrence Township.
