INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (February 3, 2016) – Lawrence Township released a statement Wednesday afternoon in response to an online petition to rename Amy Beverland Elementary School after beloved Principal Susan Jordan.

The administration and staff of Amy Beverland Elementary School and Lawrence Township are grateful for the outpouring of support for Susan Jordan and the Amy Beverland community in recent days. Part of that outpouring of support has been a petition to rename the school after Mrs. Jordan. The MSD of Lawrence Township Superintendent, Dr. Shawn Smith, and the Board of Education will take action to honor the legacy of Mrs. Jordan at the appropriate time, while continuing to recognize the school’s namesake, Amy Beverland, who was an honored and respected teacher. The school intends to work closely with the Jordan family to recognize Mrs. Jordan in the most fitting manner possible and to work with the community at large to honor the legacy of this great principal who served with distinction for more than 20 years.

Jordan died last Tuesday after she was struck by a school bus while trying to save a group of children.
