BROWNSBURG, Ind. – Have you ever had such severe back pain, you couldn’t play your favorite sport? Now imagine you’re a teenager and that back pain comes from a tumor on your spine.

14-year-old Will Copeland was very active until he got sick. The Brownsburg teen was diagnosed with a tumor on his spinal cord about two years ago. He had surgeries and chemotherapy to remove it, but there is still a piece of the tumor left.

The treatments kept him from school and the instability of his spine and intense back pain kept him from sport.

“It’s been hard. Harder than you can imagine,” said his mom Kathy Copeland.

This year, Will went back to school, but getting back to the sports he loves hasn’t been as easy.

“He is particularly somewhat self-conscious after being sick for so long,” explained Kathy.

Will’s one wish was to have his very own basketball court in the privacy of his own backyard. Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, his wish is now a reality.

Several local businesses like LIDS, Wurster Construction, and BSA LifeStructures donated their time, talent, and services to make this specially designed half court that’ll be easier on Will’s back.

“I mean it’s just a wish come true,” said Will and he looked at his court. “I wanted the court and now I got it. so I can just come out and play whenever I want.”

His family said the court is a Godsend. The best part has been seeing Will’s big smile again.

“It’s probably the first time in a couple of years he’s been happy,” said Kathy. “I wish everybody would get involved with Make-A-Wish ’cause it really makes a big difference in the kids, their siblings, their family’s lives.”

Right now, more than 200 Hoosier children with life-threatening medical conditions are waiting for their wishes to come true.
