A Johnson County man shot himself in the finger while cleaning his gun Thursday.

Officials said the man’s friend asked if he would sell the gun. The gunowner said he would and then started taking the gun apart.

The man took the magazine out of the gun and then went to separate the slide from the frame. He did not check to see if the chamber was empty. He pulled the trigger and suffered a gunshot wound to his left index finger.

The man is expected to recover.

Police would like to remind gun owners to check the chamber before cleaning guns.
