DANVILLE, Ind. – A man died Wednesday afternoon after his vehicle struck a tractor head-on in Danville.

State Road 39 was shut down in the area for several hours as a result. According to the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 4:15 p.m. at State Road 39 near State Road 236.

The driver of a GMC pickup truck, later identified as Cecil L. Hillers, 75, Lebanon, was going southbound on State Road 39 and crossed the center line into the northbound lane. The truck struck the tractor head-on, and Hillers was pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness said the tractor driver slowed down and tried to avoid the collision but couldn’t. The road was closed for several hours and was down to one lane until about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Police were still investigating what may have caused Hillers to veer across the center line.
