NASHVILLE, Ind. (Feb. 22, 2016)– A man accused of attacking a woman with a hatchet in Brown County last week pleaded not guilty in court Monday.

Police say Dana Ericson, 59, attacked an 18-year-old foreign exchange student with the hatchet, significantly cutting her back. Ericson was arrested on charges including attempted murder, aggravated battery causing serious permanent disfigurement and battery by means of a deadly weapon.

According to court documents, Ericson told police he was attempting to “perpetrate ethnic cleansing.” He also told officers he wanted to “make a point,” and that he “hates these people.”

A competency hearing will be scheduled for Ericson.

Witnesses at the scene of the attack said he may have a mental illness.
