GREENSBURG, Ind. (January 25, 2014) — A man was rushed to the hospital early Saturday morning after being found lying in the roadway on I-74 in Greensburg. He had been hit by a semi in a suicide attempt. Offcials say he will survive.

60-year-old Joe Louis Zatarain of San Antonio, Texas was lying in the right lane next to his vehicle around 1:30 a.m., when a witness says, a semi truck saw him and quickly got into the other lane to miss him. Zatarain then got up and turned the emergency lights off in his car, and returned to lie in the road again. The witness says another semi swerved to miss Zatarian, but some portion of the tractor trailer hit him.

When officers arrived, Zatarin told them he had been having personal problems and was trying to kill himself. He was taken to Decatur County Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Methodist hospital due to the severity of his injuries.

A Decatur Sheriff’s deputy said it was because of “good driving” by the truck driver that the man is still alive, quickly reacting to avoid hitting Zatarain head-on.
