INDIANAPOLIS – Crews are investigating after an overnight explosion in a south side basement left two people injured and ten others displaced.
Emergency crews were called to the 7300 block of Creekbrook Drive shortly after midnight on reports of an explosion in the area.
According to responding officers, residents had called maintenance on Sunday afternoon after they believed they smelled gas. Maintenance crews reportedly turned off the furnace at that time, with the intention of calling for repair in the morning.
IFD says an official cause has not yet been determined, but multiple windows were blown out.
Crews say a 24-year-old man was badly burned over a large portion of his body, and he was transported to Eskenazi in serious but stable condition. A woman also suffered minor burns, but she is expected to be okay.
Fire officials say the explosion and fire caused about $60,000 in damages.
Ten residents were displaced while fire officials completed their investigation.
