Marion Co. prosecutor announces support of mass transit in Central Indiana

Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry announced Monday his support for mass transit in Central Indiana and a public referendum for local voters to decide on future funding for it.

Curry stated a public, robust transit system would allow witnesses and victims to have better access to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.

“The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office fully supports the need for a functional urban transit system, not just for the economic development benefits but for the tangible public safety advantages,” Prosecutor Curry said. “Safe, affordable transportation is part of a strategic infrastructure that naturally combats crime through visibility, activity and community engagement.”

Curry said a public transportation system could help reduce families’ household expenses by thousands of dollars per year.

“Prosecutor Curry and others who serve Hoosiers daily know what is at stake if we don’t act to strengthen Central Indiana through mass transit,” said Ron Gifford, executive director, Indy Connect Now.

Further, city officials said the transit system can be beneficial in connecting underserved populations to critical community services, enhancing workforce development, as well as ensuring successful reentry of ex-offenders.

“Many believe mass transit is only about those who live in the suburbs having easy access to downtown, but it is equally about those in the inner city accessing available jobs in the suburbs,” said James Taylor, CEO of the John H. Boner Community Center.  “Mass transit is a critical ingredient in the redevelopment of our core urban neighborhoods.”

“Our businesses rely on thousands of workers and patrons who travel to the northeast area of Indianapolis every day. To ensure Binford Boulevard remains vibrant, like other older suburban neighborhoods across the country that have mass transit, we need to invest now in our system,” said Kas Vargo, board president of BRAG.

The prosecutor’s office joins 156 businesses and organizations that have so far adopted similar resolutions in support of a public referendum on mass transit funding.
