Mayor Hogsett honors former mayor Ballard at robotics event

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (January 24, 2015) — Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett honored former mayor Greg Ballard at the VEX Robotics Championship Sunday for his leadership in creating the first citywide robotics competition in the country.

The honor came with a surprise proclamation, which reads:

TO ALL WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAY COME, GREETINGS:

 

Whereas, Mayor Gregory A. Ballard pioneered the nation’s first citywide VEX Robotics Competition in Indianapolis and Marion County, which has grown from 36 teams in its first year to 170 from district, private, and charter schools, and;
Whereas, Mayor Ballard’s leadership led the City’s philanthropic community to give more than $500,000 over the course of four years, allowing all competing teams access to free robotics kits, and;

 

Whereas, Mayor Ballard was awarded the 2015 Bridge Builder Recipient by TechPoint for his efforts to spark an interest in STEM fields in our city’s children, particularly girls, minorities, and those from low-income backgrounds, and;

Whereas, Mayor Ballard has created an annual City event with bipartisan support that rallies hundreds of volunteers and plays host to thousands of spectators.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH H. HOGSETT, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF INDIANAPOLIS, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR EACH DIVISION OF THE VEX ROBOTICS CHALLENGE FROM THIS DAY FORWARD TO BE KNOWN AS THE:
Mayor Gregory A. Ballard Excellence Award
I ask all citizens of Indianapolis to join me in this proclamation.
