INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 20, 2015)-- Every month, FOX59 and Community Health Network put the call out for the community hero of the month, someone Hoosiers nominate because they inspire us or they go above and beyond to make a difference in our community and/or in someone's life. This month, we honor a special group of ladies: The Sunrays!

The Sunrays was started by Shampagne Rhodes. They are professional women including teachers, nurses, medical professionals and more. They spend Mondays with young people at the Boys and Girls Club and additional personal time with high school students. They do special service projects, toy drives, and fundraisers-- all ideas they come up with and fund themselves.

For prom season, they donated close to 25 dresses and a few tuxedos so every Warren Central High School student could go to prom if they wish! It’s about being a big sister to the girls and helping them become strong, confident and successful young ladies!

FOX59 caught up with the group on prom day, making a dream come true for Makahila Winfield. For Makala, Warren Central's prom is less about the transformation to red carpet ready and more about the woman she is becoming on her way to being a pediatrician when she starts college this fall.

Watch Makahila's red carpet experience and see why The Sunrays are the FOX59 and Community Health Network community heroes of the month!
