INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The holiday shopping season is upon us and whether you enjoy the process or not, the good news is these days you have a lot more tools to help you save.

We linked up with shopping expert Danielle Smith at Castleton Square Mall on the day before Thanksgiving to get some advice. She said, you should always start with making a list of exactly what you want to buy.

“Know what you’re shopping for," said Smith. "If you’re kind of just walking around the mall in and out of stores, I mean you’re gonna get frustrated, you’re gonna get tired and you’re just gonna wanna leave and say everyone is getting a gift card.”

Next thing: shop around.

It's easier to do that online, but there are tools out there to help if you're going store to store.

A device Danielle loves to use to do that is called 'Alfie.' It's a voice controlled personal shopper and you're talking to a human.

"You say 'Alfie... what’s the best Black Friday deal on cashmere sweaters?' And it’ll search any retailer," explained Danielle. "So when the Alfie gets your request, you can leave, be at the mall and it'll alert you on your phone and you can reply at your convenience. And it'll say this is the best place to go shop for cashmere sweaters in your market and these are the prices."

Chrome has a feature called 'Honey' which searches for discount codes right before you checkout online.

There are also lots of price comparison apps like ShopSavvy.

Stores like Target have their own apps too and most stores are willing to price match on the spot if you find something cheaper at a different store.

What about doorbusters? Danielle said make sure they're the real deal by asking how long that price will last.

"Usually those doorbusters have a time limit. So it’s like Thanksgiving night until 1 p.m. on Black Friday and then the price slightly goes up after that time frame."

Whatever you do, make sure to save time for your loved ones; that may be the only priceless gift you can give.
