INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Dec. 23, 2014)– A mother and her boyfriend face charges after police say a 3-year-old girl was abused.
Police say Maria Calderon, 24, took her 3-year-old daughter to Methodist Hospital Monday with multiple injuries including significant head trauma.
The child was transferred to Riley Hospital in extremely critical condition, at which point staff called police.
“They recognized something was terribly wrong,” IMPD Ofc. Rafael Diaz said.
Diaz described the detectives’ report as hard to read, saying it was the worst case of child abuse he’d seen in his time at IMPD.
“It’s hard really even talking about it,” Diaz said.
Police say the child’s injuries were inflicted. Calderon and her boyfriend, Freddie Bailey, 24, were arrested.
Diaz said Bailey admitted to what he called discipline of the toddler when questioned by detectives.
“(He) admitted to striking the child, hitting her with a belt, also striking her head against the wall several times,” Diaz said.
Calderon and Bailey both face a charge for neglect of a dependent, and Bailey faces two additional charges for aggravated battery.
“You picture kids two days from now opening their presents, smiles on their faces … and you have a child that’s laying in a hospital bed, helpless,” Diaz said.
The girl was originally listed in extremely critical condition. FOX59 learned from family members Wednesday that the child did not survive her injuries, and has been declared brain dead. She is being medically kept alive in order to donate organs.
