The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the latest movie from Marvel Comics and Sony featuring the beloved superhero Spider-Man. The movie is the sequel to the 2012 hit The Amazing Spider-Man. Both movies were directed by Marc Webb who started his career as a music video director. Andrew Garfield returns as the webbed hero and Emma Stone makes her second turn as his love interest, Gwen Stacy. The rest of the cast is rounded out with Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Sally Field, and Paul Giamatti. The movie is being release in conventional 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D.
Picking up where The Amazing Spider-Man left off, we find Peter Parker (Garfield) and Gwen Stacy (Stone) graduating from high school and Spider-Man still keeping the city safe from crime. Peter and Gwen are in love, but Peter is having a hard time living with himself after the promise he made to Gwen’s father on his deathbed. Along with these feelings, Peter is still searching for the truth about his parents. In the midst of a high speed car chase, Spider-Man saves the life of Max Dillon (Foxx) who is a loner and happens to be an OsCorp employee. In a freak accident at work, Max falls into a tank of genetically modified electric eels, thus turning him into a human electric generator. Around the same time, Harry Osborn (DeHaan) has returned home to visit his dying father and take over as head of OsCorp. The problem with Harry is that he has the same disease as his father and he’s dying. He thinks the only way for him to survive is Spider-Man’s blood. After a battle in Times Square between Spider-Man and Max, Max is captured and imprisoned. Harry now knows the only way for him to get to Spider-Man is through the help of Max who is now known as Electro. Spider-Man must now stop Electro and Harry before the entire city is destroyed and he meets his final fate.
Now that it’s May, summer movie season officially begins and we kick things off with a bang. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the very definition of what a big summer blockbuster should look like. It has tons of action, amazing special effects, a lot of laughs, and a pretty interesting storyline to boot. Not to mention the fantastic chemistry between the two lead actors, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. They are also a couple in real life and it really shows on-screen. The movie gets the action rolling right out of the gate with a huge police car chase that is crazy good, and never really lets up. The two and half hour run time absolutely flies by. Marc Webb has created a bigger-than-life movie and I think he’s definitely a director to keep an eye on. Not only has he created a big superhero movie, but he managed to give it heart and personality. On a Marc Webb side note, if you haven’t seen (500) Days of Summer, do yourself a favor and watch it as soon as you can. The rest of the cast are great as well; Jamie Foxx is so good in everything he does and Dane DeHaan has the feel of a young Leo DiCaprio. I feel like we all got spoiled in the summer of 2012 when The Avengers gave us multiple superheroes in the same movie. It’s hard to compete with that, but Spidey definitely holds his own all by himself. This is a must see in the theater and I’d recommend seeing it on as big a screen as you can find. I know it’s expensive to go to the movies nowadays, but The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is well worth the price of admission. You’ll get a lot of bang for your buck.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in theaters on Friday, May 2.
