LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Jan. 18, 2014) — State Police report I-65 southbound has reopened, but is slow going. They are still working on accidents on the northbound side.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that a semi going northbound slowed for a crash that occurred in front of it and the semis behind it were not able to get stopped because they were traveling too fast for the conditions.
Nine semis and four cars were involved in the initial crash with secondary crashes occurring behind the original crash.
One semi had a fire start in the engine compartment and its load of frozen pizzas burned along with a second semi trailer loaded with florescent lights.
Officials say four people were taken to nearby hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
Police, fire and paramedics were all called to the scene.
Police still are not sure how many vehicles were involved in the secondary crashes.
Southbound I-65 is expected to re-open early Sunday morning.
