CARSON CITY, Nev. – A military mother lashed out at Donald Trump during a campaign appearance featuring vice presidential candidate and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence Monday.

The mother was first greeted with cheers and then quickly booed when she asked Pence about Trump’s treatment of veterans and his recent comments about a Gold Star family whose son died serving his country. Khizr Khan, a Muslim, criticized Trump during a speech at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

Trump responded by questioning if Khan’s wife didn’t speak during the DNC because her husband had forbidden it. Trump said Monday that the story isn’t about Khan, “who is all over the place doing interviews,” but tried to put the focus on radical Islamic terrorism.

Reaction came swiftly and sharply from all sides, with leading Republicans like House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) expressing support for the Khan family.

But it was Pence Monday who had to answer for Trump during a campaign event in Carson City.

“Time and time again, Trump has disrespected our nation’s armed forces and veterans and his disrespect for Mr. Khan and his family is just an example of that,” the woman said as boos became more evident. “Will there ever be a point in time that you’re able to look at Trump in the eye and tell him enough is enough? You have a son in the military. How do you tolerate his disrespect?”

As the crowd became louder, Pence called for calm and quiet.

“It’s all right. It’s all right,” he said to the crowd. “Folks, that’s what freedom looks like and that’s what freedom sounds like.”

Pence thanked the mother for her son’s service, adding that Capt. Humayun Khan is a hero and he cherishes Gold Star families. He also reiterated Trump’s support for the military.
