SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (July 25, 2014) – They were intended as a gesture of goodwill…but families found them creepy instead.

Someone left porcelain dolls at the homes of eight families. Families found the porcelain figures “creepy or very disturbing” because they resembled their daughters, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department told KTLA.

The families all lived in the same neighborhood; some of the girls attended the same elementary school. Police took the dolls Tuesday, when the investigation began.

“Anything that has the potential to involve children causes us some concern,” Lt. Jeff Hallock told the TV stationNO earlier this week.

Thursday, investigators said a woman who lives in the community had put the dolls on the porches and intended it as a gesture of kindness.

The case has since been closed.
