INDIANAPOLIS — Metro Police blocked West 56th Street on the northwest side early Thursday.
Around 4 a.m., police blocked the roadway near the CSX railroad crossing due to some type of spill.
Crews from Pike Township Fire, IMPD and the Marion County Health Department responded to the scene.
According to the Pike Township Fire Department, it appears some type of petroleum product is leaking from an underground pipeline.
Both BP/Amoco and Marathon have underground pipelines in the area. Both companies shut down their pipelines until workers determine the source of the leak.
Representatives from the health department continue to take readings and tell Fox59 there is no danger to residents in the area.
Police are directing through traffic around the blockage at Guion Road on the west, and Cooper Road on the east.
It’s not known how long West 56th Street will be blocked.
