PUTNAMVILLE, Ind. (January 24, 2016)–An offender at the Putnamville Correctional Facility has died after being diagnosed with rapidly progressive flu-like symptoms.

Another man is hospitalized and is on a ventilator for support.

Indiana Correction officials say they are dealing with an outbreak of patients with progressive viral like symptoms with several patients progressing to severe shortness of breath and pneumonia like symptoms.

The Indiana Department of Correction activate an influenza control plan after several inmates became ill at the beginning of last week.

Currently, nine offenders  are undergoing close observation at Terre Haute Regional Hospital and a similar number are being treated at the medical observation unit at the correctional facility.

IDOC and the facility medical staff are working closely with the State Health Department and Center for Disease Control to identify specific causes of the illness and management of the situation.

Safety precautions are being taken at the facility to prevent further spread of the illness.

IDOC officials say visitation at the Putnamville Correctional Facility has been cancelled until further notice.
