ALEXANDRIA, Ind. — An early morning house fire in Alexandria left one person dead and another injured.
The Alexandria Fire Department (AFD) responded to a residence on the 400 block of W. John Street around 5:04 a.m. Thursday.
So far the cause of that fire remains under investigation.
Firefighters say by the time they arrived they did transport one person to the hospital with minor injuries, but a second victim was found dead inside.
A smoking pile of bricks and wood is all that’s left of the home. A charred chair marks the spot where the front door once stood.
Neighbors woke up to find a massive wall of fire.
“Just coming out here was insane. It was extremely orange and it was super dark out. It was huge flames, like an inferno walking out here. It was quite scary,” said neighbor Maggie Hannah.
Maggie lives across the street and says the size of the fire forced her family to leave their home until everything was under control.
“We actually saw some of the flames come into our yard and that’s when we knew we really needed to go,” said Hannah.
In fact, the flames quickly spread to a car parked out front and damaged the side of an adjacent home.
“The neighboring house did have some heat damage. That was our first thing to put a hose on, but it already had damage before we got there,” said Alexandria fire chief Brian Cuneo.
The fire chief says while his crews were able to prevent more damage being done to the neighboring home, there was nothing they could do to stop the victims home from being destroyed.
“It was a totally defensive fire from the start,” said Cuneo. “I mean it was a fully involved fire. We were unable to gain entry to the residence.”
So far, the cause of the fire remains unclear and officials haven’t released the identity of the person who died.
“I just think it’s super sad. We don’t know what happened, but I feel terrible for the owner. I know the guy. He’s a great guy and I feel awful,” said Hannah.
The fire chief says this is first fatal fire the city of Alexandria has seen in more than 10 years.
