(March 31, 2014) – Maybe you’ve seen those blue-and-red lights coming up behind your car while you’re driving—and maybe you’ve been flustered and unsure of what to do next.
A new phone app aims to help drivers after they’ve been pulled over by police. The app, called “Oh Crap,” was designed by Iowa lawyers to dispatch quick legal advice. It’s intended to help people who’ve been pulled over for suspicion of drunk driving.
The app lists basic legal rights, has a blood alcohol calculator and an emergency “Oh Crap” button to dispense immediate advice like “be polite” or “lawyer up.” The phone will also record conversations with officers and send it to a secure server.
Police said the app could be a valuable educational tool for drivers, but they also have their concerns. They’re worried the app could help people learn how to get away with drinking and driving.
The creators said it’s designed to make sure people know their legal rights. They estimate the app has been downloaded more than 4,000 times. Find out more here.
