Woman dies after being shot near canal in downtown Indy

INDIANAPOLIS — A woman was shot and killed near the canal in downtown Indianapolis early Sunday morning, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

911 operators received a call in reference to the shooting shortly before 3:30 a.m.

Officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Canal Court, where they found a woman who had been shot. She was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, where she later died.

The woman has been identified as 24-year-old Jessica Doty Whitaker.

Trouble at the canal

This is the third shooting police are investigating along the canal in just seven days.

Last Sunday, a woman was shot in the leg at the park near the canal. She was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

The next day, a 14-year-old was shot and killed near the canal after attempting to rob someone.
