INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Aug. 27, 2015)-- The Indiana Donor Network said they’re seeing increased attention in the wake of IndyCar driver Justin Wilson’s death. This week we learned Wilson was an organ donor and saved six lives.

It’s never an easy conversation to have, but those at the Indiana Donor Network said you need to make your wishes known with your loved ones, and they encourage organ donation as a way to keep a memory alive.

Still Thursday, flowers remained outside Gate 1 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, along with memorials and mementos for fallen IndyCar driver Justin Wilson.

But Wilson’s legacy lives on through organ donation.

“With #giftoflife @justin_wilson saved 6 lives today. He just keeps setting the bar higher. Keep Julia & the girls in your prayers," his brother Stefan wrote on Twitter earlier this week.

It is attention and awareness the Indiana Donor Network knows is needed.

“It just puts that story out there,” said Corinne Osinski-Carey, Community Relations Coordinator with the Indiana Donor Network.

Osinski-Carey said since Wilson’s organ donation story, engagements with their social media accounts are up, along with visits to the website. She believes Wilson’s story resonates with Hoosiers, because he’s an IndyCar driver and part of our community.

“It shows that really anybody can donate, and sharing that story and having that pride that your loved one has been able to make that impact, it can be really helpful,” she said.

Seventy percent of Hoosiers are registered donors. Osinski-Carey wants to reach that other thirty percent, and she believes a high-profile donation like this could bridge the gap.

“I think it shows the giving nature of Justin himself. It spoke to his character that they described before his accident,” she said.
