KOKOMO, Ind. — City leaders are providing a better look at how bad the damage is in Kokomo after tornadoes ripped through the city last week.

According to city leaders a total of 1,002 homes and business sustained damage:

  • 81 destroyed
  • 173 with major damage
  • 355 with minor damage
  • 393 affected

The sight of large construction equipment lined the streets of Kokomo neighborhoods. Many residents deemed their homes destroyed and already starting tearing them down Monday morning.

“I’m tearing it down and moving to Myrtle Beach,” said Kokomo resident, Jerry Cooper.

Other residents who have been given the “all clear” to go back into their homes said they don’t feel safe.

“There’s mold in the apartments and some of the apartments are ready to cave,” said resident Kandace Cook. She added, “We’re gonna stay here until we can find something different.”

County officials said the only businesses deemed destroyed is Starbucks. The Kokomo Country Club also sustained heavy damage to the golf course, clubhouse and pool areas.
