INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (August 4, 2015) – Residents are coming together for National Night Out and making a commitment to fight crime in their communities.
IMPD recognized several outstanding citizens as “Crime fighters of the year” as the mayor and police chief kicked off the events.
“We met new people, we met new stakeholders, we met new problem solvers, we met people who really are invested and been kind of like unsung heroes,” said Chief Rick Hite.
In Marion County, IMPD officers are asking people to turn on their porch lights and participate in one of the many planned events like block parties, cookouts, parades, neighborhood walks, and meetings. There were about 100 events taking place around Indianapolis.
Public safety officials are asking residents to get involved, especially in some of the city’s most violent neighborhoods.
“I think that’s actually a fantastic idea, I love seeing the way the data is coming out of that we’re actually seeing some improvements in the New York Sherman area,” said Chris Staab with teh Near Eastside Community Organization.
