INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Police are investigating the fatal stabbing of a 23-year-old mother on the northwest side of Indianapolis.
The stabbing occurred at 26th and Riverside near Riverside Park. Police said a woman was found stabbed multiple times inside a car around 3:30 a.m.
This neighborhood where the stabbing took place has traditionally been a high crime area, but that has been changing in recent years.
In fact, the murder overnight brings an end to a string of 168 peaceful nights in this area dating back to last summer.
Police say eyewitnesses told them the crime actually started at a bar on 10th street in Haughville.
The victim, identified as Mireya Arciga, apparently got into an argument with another woman over a man.
Police say the stabbing is not a random act of violence.
“It appears these individuals were at the park, but it started at the bar. We are trying to piece together what sparked this because it does not appear to be a random act,” said IMPD officer Aaron Hamer.
Last August, an impromptu block party erupted into gunfire along MLK killing one man and wounding two others.
That marked the last homicide in the United Northwest Area until this week.
The last youth homicide in the neighborhood, one involving a victim under the age of 24, was back in 2015 on north Harding when 18-year-old Devon Whitlock and 3 others were killed.
Leaders with the 10 Point Coalition which patrols the area say the overnight stabbing breaks both those marks.
“This neighborhood has done a really tremendous job of reducing the level of violence and they’re involved,” said Rev. Charles Harrison.
Reverend Harrison says people who live in the United Northwest neighborhoods are upset because the fight actually started in another part of town, but the death takes away from the peace efforts in the area.
“People here get really frustrated when people come into the neighborhood and disrupt what’s been going on,” said Harrison. “These neighborhoods are working hard to create a different atmosphere.
Police said several individuals have been detained in connection with the stabbing but so far no arrests have been made.
