INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A young Indianapolis mother was found shot to death in an alley on the near east side.

Police say the gruesome discovery was made Friday morning although they’re not sure when the victim was actually shot.

IMPD said the victim was shot either late Thursday night or early Friday morning and she lay dead in the alley way for several hours before being found.

Community leaders once again say more needs to be done to stop the ongoing violence in that area.

Friends and family could barely believe the news.

“She didn’t get shot. What are they gonna shoot her for? Oh my God,” said the victim’s friend, Andrew Wills.

The victim is identified as Candice Pigee. Andre shared a child with Candice, who also left behind a 1-year-old boy.

“These ladies out here they got babies. People need to think. These babies need mommas,” said Wills.

Unfortunately, the shooting in the alley is nothing new to the area.

Within just one mile of 10th and Rural there were six criminal homicides last year, including a double murder on Oxford, just a short walk from the alley way where Pigee died.

Just three days into 2017, the year’s first murder took place a half mile away on Jefferson.

“This is one of the hot spots. When you look at 10th and Rural, this is one of the high crime focus areas,” said Rev. Malachi Walker.

Walker believes more resources need to be invested in the area of 10th and Rural, not just to protect the people that live there, but also to drive down the city’s violent crimes stats.

“That’s big picture. We want to cut the numbers, but the numbers will only be cut if we all come together and we all say we’re sick and tired of all the killing in the community,” said Walker.

In the meantime, Pigee’s friends just hope someone is held accountable for the young mother’s death.

“I just hope whoever knows who done it says something,” said Wills.

So far no arrests have been made in the shooting. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
