INDIANAPOLIS – An investigation is underway after an overnight homicide on Indy’s south side.
Police were called to the 4100 block of Creek Way around 1:30 a.m. Sunday after a man called 911 reporting a woman had been shot in the Stone Lake Apartments on Indianapolis’ south side. Then the victim herself called police.
Tracking the woman’s phone, responding officers found the victim in the 4100 block of Creek Way. 18-year-old Da Tara Lynn Johnson died at the hospital, the second teenager murdered in Indianapolis this year.
A friend of the family declined comment as Johnson’s grandfather posted a facebook tribute to her Sunday.
Johnson’s killing was the 11th homicide of 2022 as the city’s murder rate keeps pace with last year’s record setting tally.
“I feel awful because obviously somebody was shot but I knew I lived in a bad neighborhood but I didn’t think it would be this bad,” said Cameron Rogers as he stood on the balcony of his apartment above the murder scene. “As soon as I started moving in they told me to lock all my stuff because they have break ins and things.”
“I literally saw a dude shooting a gun on New Years,” said Rogers. “I saw a dude just like right on the sidewalk just firing a gun in the air and I’m like, okay, you’re freaking people out because you’re just in the middle of the walkway just firing a gun, and I almost told him to stop, but, he’s a dude with a gun. What am I supposed to do?”
Rogers said he moved into his apartment six months because at $750 a month it was one of the cheapest rents he could find.
Now he’s thinking of moving out as soon as possible while taking precautions to stay safe.
“As long as you keep your doors locked, keep your head down and you just kind of live your life,” said Rogers. “It sounds awful but its kind of the realities of the situation.”
At this time, police have not released any suspect information or what might have led up to the shooting. It comes after a day after IMPD responded to three people shot on the near northeast side. One of those people were killed. Detectives are looking in to whether or not these three people shot are all connected.
