GREENWOOD – Police say a man who held his estranged wife at gunpoint and fatally shot her friend had recently become obsessed with her and the end of their two-decade marriage.

Greenwood police said Kevin Sharrett couldn’t cope with the fact that his wife, Michelle Sharrett, was seeing someone else and that their divorce was nearly complete.

That struggle came to a head, police said, when Sharrett confronted his estranged wife and a friend at the Devonshire Apartments off State Road 135 on Feb. 13. That encounter ended in the death of 47-year-old Steven Lively as well as Kevin Sharrett’s death by a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a high-speed chase with police.

Police said the investigation is winding down. While every detective in the department was working on the case last week, a single detective is now assigned. Investigators are waiting on toxicology tests to find out if Sharrett had drugs or alcohol in his system. Police also await the results of ballistics tests.

Greenwood police said a friend of Sharrett’s told them that Sharrett had recently become fixated on the end of his marriage. He also said Sharrett wasn’t violent in nature and was unlikely to engage in a prolonged shootout.

Sharrett’s wife advised police that her husband would be more likely to take his own life than go to prison or be involved in a standoff.

He shot himself during a police pursuit that ended when he crashed into a home in Camby.

Michelle Sharrett filed for divorce in 2011, according to police. The couple had been together for 21 years and had three children. The divorce filing happened just months after Michelle Sharrett was accused of cutting her husband with scissors during a 2010 dispute.

Prosecutors dropped a misdemeanor domestic battery charge in that case after she went through counseling.

They were set to finalize the divorce in 2011 before deciding to try to save their marriage.
