INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 22, 2015) -- Two suspects were shot and an officer was injured during a police-involved shooting Sunday evening on the west side of Indianapolis.

IMPD officers say they received an anonymous call at approximately 9:48 p.m. about a robbery in progress at the Family Dollar store on West 34th Street.

When police arrived, they say two armed men in ski masks were escorting employees around the store. Officers observed the suspects move toward the exit in an attempt to flee. As the suspects exited the business, IMPD officers gave loud verbal commands for the suspects to drop their weapons. An unidentified male raised his arm and pointed a firearm at officers, and as a last resort, officers used deadly force to prevent the suspect from inflicting injury on the officers and citizens. The store employees were not harmed physically during this ordeal.

“Officers used amazing restraint and firearms discipline in saving the lives of employees. This incident could have been much worse. I want to thank the citizens for their actions in assisting police,” said IMPD Chief Rick Hite. An intense gunfight involving three officers and two suspects quickly ended after the suspects were struck.

Officers immediately provided emergency medical care while waiting for EMS personnel to arrive. One suspect was transported to Methodist in serious condition with a gunshot wound. The second suspect was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds.

“It’s not something we want to do, but unfortunately people don’t understand that you can’t rob, you can’t steal, you can’t put people in harm’s way at gunpoint and not pay a price for that. Our officers are trained to defend lives and protect lives and they did exactly that,” Hite said.

An officer was injured by shrapnel, but was treated and released on scene by medics.

Officers involved in the incident will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard for any officer involved shooting investigation.

The suspects have been identified as 24-year old Tyyell Hall of Gary, Indiana. Hall had a warrant for robbery during the time of the incident. The second suspect has been identified as 19-year old Steven Hall of Indianapolis, Indiana. Both suspects have been released from the hospital and are being held at the APC.
