INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Indianapolis Metropolitan police are searching for a man who stole an expensive painting from a downtown hotel.

Police say on the night of August 4, a man entered the Conrad Hotel located at 50 West Washington Street and removed a piece of art from the wall. The piece is titled “Myself #70” by artist Jason Myers.

“He just basically walked into the Conrad.  He looked like he came prepared came with a duffel bag and he walked around until he saw art he liked, put it in his bag and walked right out,” said Sgt. Steve DuBois with Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana.

Police say surveillance images show the thief walking into the hotel with a red bag over his shoulder, which he used to store the stolen art.

The halls of the Conrad hotel are still decorated with dozens of paintings by the same artist whose work was stolen.  Police say thefts involving a piece of art are extremely rare.

“The entire six years I’ve been here I can think of maybe three the entire time.  We had sculptures taken off the canal once, there was a theft in Zionsville and now this one.  Those are the only ones I can think of,” said Dubois.

The artist who had his work swiped didn’t want to go on camera, but says the missing painting is worth about $3,800.

He just wants police to nab the thief before he steals from someone else.

“If this suspect is willing to take something off the wall of the Conrad, he’s willing to take something from anywhere.  We’d like to get him locked up and in front of a judge,” said Dubois.

Police say the missing piece of art has been entered into an FBI database, but so far they have not gotten any leads.
