INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (October 30, 2015) – Republican Chuck Brewer and Democrat Joe Hogsett squared off in their last debate just days before voters head to the polls. Public safety has continued to be one of the main issues leading up to the election, especially with a recent shooting a Washington Square Mall.

The mayoral hopefuls joined host Amos Brown on AM1310 The Light. His questions covered a variety of topics like crime, education, affordable housing and neighborhoods. Some of the questions were submitted by listeners.

After the debate, FOX59’s Liz Gelardi asked both candidates what they would do to address violence within their first 30 to 60 days in office. Hogsett said his previous job as U.S. Attorney makes his the right fit for the city’s next mayor.

“I think the very first day I would convene law enforcement officials from federal, state and local level to talk about how we can better respond I think that’s why in the proposal that I’ve offered I’ve added a 150 additional officers I think that’s not going to happen overnight but obviously adding more officers I think increases the proactivity of law enforcement officials to that type of crime,” said Hogsett.

Brewer responded to that same question citing his experience as a marine.

“As somebody who has traditionally not been shy about getting out on the front lines I’m going to be out there nearly every day with IMPD or meeting with neighborhood associations going to the scenes of incidents I will engage with gang leaders myself to talk with them that’s the kind of leader I am because we have to get this problem under control,” said Brewer.

Both candidates have remained fairly civil during the entire campaign, prompting Brown to ask, “So here’s the big question: on what issues do you disagree with your opponent?”
